Education: Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree in 1979, with academic honors (3.0 G.P.A.), from the Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas, and Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration (B.S.) Central Missouri State University in 1975 (3.4 G.P.A.) and an Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) in Police Science from Penn Valley Community College in 1971.
Admissions: Admitted to the Kansas State Bar and before the United States District Courts for the District of Kansas in 1980 and before the United States 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver, Colorado in 1994 and before the United States District Court for the Western District of Missouri in 1999 and to the Missouri State Bar in 2005.
Employment: My career includes service in the Shawnee County, Kansas District Attorney’s office while in Law School as an intern 1978 – 1979. Upon graduation I was employed in the Johnson County, Kansas District Attorney’s office as an Assistant D.A. From there, in October 1981 I went to the City of Lenexa, Kansas as a full time Assistant City Attorney, Police Legal Advisor and City Prosecutor. I worked primarily with the Police Department and the Planning Commission. In 1985 my position was reduced to part time and I continued as on-call Police Legal Advisor and City Prosecutor. I was employed in this later capacity until February 1991. Since 1985 I have been engaged in the full- time practice of law with extensive knowledge and expertise in Kansas Workers Compensation, personal injury cases, and general practice. I was a Kansas City, Missouri police officer from 1971 through 1977.
Associations: Current member of the Kansas Bar Association, the Johnson County Bar Association, the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association and the Kansas Association for Justice, where I am an Eagle and member of the Board of Governors.
Personal: I have been married for 40 years this June 3rd. My wife Deborah and I have four children and eight grand-children. All but one daughter and her husband and two children reside other than in Johnson County, Kansas. I have been actively involved in the Prince of Peace Parish in Olathe. This Fall I began my 30th year as a Children’s School of Religion teacher. I served on the Parish Council from 1993-98 and as Council President during the current church’s construction from ground breaking through dedication 1995-96. I am a past Board Member and Chairman of the Johnson County Heritage Grant Review Board from 2007 until it was disbanded by the State Legislature at the end of 2014. I am the past Chair (3 years) of the Board of Trustees of the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop and Farm Foundation in Olathe and served as a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees since its incorporation in 1997. My terms then extended into October 2003. I was the first Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kansas East Youth Services, Inc., (K.E.Y.S.) in 1986 and a Board Member through 1988. I was the last President of Live and Learn, Inc. in 1985-86 and a Board Member from 1983 before it’s merger with Optimist Youth Homes, Inc. to form the new corporation K.E.Y.S. My hobbies include hunting, shooting, civilian civil war re-enacting and Western re-enacting, bicycling, walking, reading, coin collecting and Gillette razor collecting. I currently possess an extensive collection of Gillette historic razors and cases.
